A native of Greenville, South Carolina, I began music studies at age 4 with my Aunt Virginia. She was a gifted pianist who had the patience to deal with an energetic child, unsure whether I preferred piano over my many other options. Aunt Virginia won out. Though interested in and proficient in both piano and clarinet, the piano was my primary interest until age 12 when our church organist left, and Mom stepped to the fore and said, "Johnny can do it!" Voila -- an organ career was born!
The rest is history. In addition to normal 12-year-old interests, I was taking private piano, organ, and clarinet lessons. Marching and concert bands were added to the regime a year or two later.
Beginning in high school, Bach became more than a hero. He became an obsession, and I became deeply committed to learning and performing the complete organ works of J.S. Bach. With the aid of an excellent piano teacher, I worked on and performed Bach's French and English suites during my senior year in high school. This was a goal that was not fully realized, but the music of J.S. Bach remains among my favorites.
Repertory today includes many of Bach's works but includes music from all periods, including much of the organ works of contemporaries like Langlais, Rutter, Vierne, and Locklair.
